How it works
There are two types of electric hot water systems:
Storage – Water is heated with an element and stored inside a tank ready for use
Continuous – Water is heated only when required, so a tank isn’t needed
Benefits of an electric hot water system
- They are the cheapest to buy of all the systems
- Some electric systems can be programmed to do most of the heating during off-peak times, which can help to minimise energy bills
Drawbacks of an electric hot water system
- They are the most expensive system to run long-term, due to their low energy efficiency
- Some electric options require larger storage units than other systems
- They have higher greenhouse emissions
